4 Tips to Help You Stay Focused When Studying

Learning to focus is an important life skill, especially for people who have to juggle multiple commitments. Most online students are either working full time or are primary caregivers. Balancing work and other commitments take a toll on their abilities to stay focused and motivated. If you are one of the thousands of students struggling to complete assignments on time, here’s what you can do about it:

Stay Focused When Studying

Quit Multitasking:

For a long time now, we’ve been made to believe that multitasking is an efficient way to get a lot of things done in a short time. However, scientists are increasingly finding reasons to believe that this isn’t the case. For example, Josh Kaufman, in his book The Personal MBA, points out that to take action, our brain has to load content to the working memory. But when constantly switching tasks, we’re focusing our minds to load and reload contexts again and again. Thus, we could spend an entire day multitasking without actually getting anything done. Single-minded focus not only helps to get work done quickly but efficiently as well.

Pre-commit to a Task:

Pre-committing to a task ensures that you limit yourself to working on a single task and not leaving until you’ve completed it. This is sometimes called the burnt ships technique, attributed to Hernan Cortes, who asked his sailors to burn their boats before attacking the Aztecs. This ensured that his men had nothing to go back to and had to focus all their energies on defeating the enemy.
